Lucy Youdell
Staff Flying Instructor & CAA Flight Examiner
Lucy developed an excitement of flight at a young age (much preferring the airport environment and the flight to get on holiday to the destination!) so after a surprise birthday trial flight at 16 years of age the flying bug bit. She took the modular route through her training, passionate about becoming a Flight Instructor first and foremost before looking to progress within her field. Whilst completing her ATPL theory exams and progressing with her flying training she worked in numerous aspects of aviation including light aircraft maintenance, weekend assisting the FISO at Wellesbourne and Flight attending. Lucy qualified as a Flight Instructor in 2011 and has been teaching at Wellesbourne ever since, delighted to join the SWFS instructional team in 2020. Initially teaching full time for 3 years she then immersed herself in the field of Ground Operations and worked a roster around her instructing at a Business Jet company and later a medical repatriation company at Oxford Airport. Here she gained a vast array of knowledge of flight planning in an ever-changing demanding environment and developed key skills and knowledge that she still applies in her job today.
In 2016 she was employed as a First Officer on a Citation Jet, progressing onto a Nextant and since 2018 has been flying an Embraer Legacy 500/Praetor 600 becoming a Captain in early 2022 for a Private Jet operator based in the UK. She flew not only in Europe but has had the opportunity to fly into varied countries such as Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan as well as the Falkland Islands! The Praetor 600 has a range of 4000 nautical miles, so it also has the ability to reach the US in one hop which allows for the perfect balance between short and long haul flights.
Lucy has since joined the airline fraternity as a pilot operating an Airbus A321 out of Birmingham Airport .
When not obsessing with Aviation, Lucy thoroughly enjoys singing and as well as being a member of her local church choir, is part of a semi-professional choir as a First Soprano. Music scores range from Haydn and Mozart to Carmina Burana which allows a challenging relief from the fast pace of work. She has also been a volunteer with Girlguiding for many years as a Rainbow and Brownie leader and more recently District Commissioner. At home rescuing unwanted animals is the order of the day with 5 hens in the garden and the house doubling up as a retirement home for moggies, a black fluffball being the current occupant so she felt right at home when she walked through the door to be greeted by Romeo, the Flying School Cat.
